The steel industry globally, particularly in India, is facing frequent blows from external factors such as lower prices, increased Chinese imports, increasingly difficult land acquisition etc. A Tata Steel lifer recently took on the mantle of the century old steel power of India to push ahead with ambitious growth plans. T.V Narendran's close to three decades of in-company experience is spread across a wide range of areas like marketing and sales, international trade, supply chain and planning, and operation and general management in India and overseas in various ranks.</div>

An inclusive and collaborative leader, Narendran was at the helm of it's Indian and South East Asian operations before taking charge as the first Global CEO and MD of the 110 years old Tata Steels recently. Straight out of business school, Narendran joined Tata Steel in 1988 and worked in the International Trading Division till 1997. He has spent five years in Dubai taking care of Tata Steels' exports to the Middle East. On returning to India, he moved from international trade to marketing and sales division working closely to develop market for the cold rolling mill project, supply chain management, sales planning etc. It was when steel started to be looked upon as a brand that needed development in 2001 that he was promoted to be the Chief of Marketing & Sales (Long Products). He was instrumental in building the 'Tata Tiscon' brand and it's distribution network.</div>

Narendran served as the Principal Executive Officer of B. Muthuraman, the then Managing Director of Tata Steel from 2003 to 2005. He was actively involved when Tata Steel acquired a Singapore based steel company, NatSteel, in 2005, which was also the first overseas acquisition of the company. Post acquisition, he was appointed as the Executive Vice President in 2005 and then as the Deputy President (Operations) before taking over as the President and CEO of NatSteel on January 1, 2008. NatSteel was operated through a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Steel called Natsteel Asia Pte Ltd. He played a vital role in the operational integration and financial turnaround of Tata Steel and NatSteel Asia group companies.</div>

During his reign at NatSteel, he earned his strides in the steel industry and rose to be an inevitable presence in the Asian steel market. He served as the director on the Board of South East Asia Iron & Steel Institute (SEAISI), as the President of the ASEAN Iron & Steel Federation (AISIF) and was also the Vice Chairman of the CII (India Business Forum) in Singapore.</div>

NatSteel was a great learning experience for Narendran. The lessons he learned there while encoutering the unexpected challenges equipped him to handle difficult situations he faced later as the MD of Tata Steels. Just six months into his new position, the company had to face the ripples of Lehman Brothers crash. Great planning and proactive decisions helped him to anchor the company in its tough times.</div>

With his international exposure and hands-on experience in products and marketing functions, he moved back to Tata Steels as its Vice President - Safety & Flat Products Divisions in 2010 after making NatSteel a much more efficient and profitable unit.</div>

At 48, Narendran was one of the youngest to take over the reins at Tata Steel when he was appointed as the Managing Director of Tata Steel for India and South East Asia on November 1, 2013. Immediately after his appointment, the iron ore mines across India was shut down due to a change in the industry regulation. A crunch in the raw materials was never part of the plan when the first industrial city was founded based on the high traces of iron ore in Jamshedpur. Inspite of having many unfavourable circumstances, the company weathered the storm by importing the raw material from Australia and continued to run the steel plant at almost full capacity. With great teamwork and proactive leadership, the operation went on even when the mines remained closed til August 2015 and created records in the history of the company.</div>

Execution and commission of one of the largest greenfield projects in India - Kalinganagar steel plant in Odisha was one of the great achievements of Narendran. The project which was initially announced to begin in 2005 faced many roadblocks. When a police firing over land acquisition took lives, it was just the beginning of many obstacles, putting the project on hold indefinitely. At a time when the management started losing hopes of taking off the project ever, Narendran stepped in.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: justify;">
Building hospitals and schools established the Tata brand equity among the local community. The project made progress when Narendran won their hearts. He constantly met the stakeholders, reviewed the project and ensured that everybody had access to him. The project was dedicated to Odisha in 2015 before starting the commercial production in May 2016. The plant capacity also was boosted enabling the delivery to higher value segments like steel for automobiles taking production capacity in India to about 13 million metric tons. The three million tonne plant started running in its full capacity with a very short span of time. To address the global downturn in steel industry, it ramped up the Jamshedpur plant and developed new market segments. The proactive decisions of Narendran and his team helped the steel giant to retain the leadership position in the domestic market even in odd times.</div>

In the year ending March 2017, the operations at Jamshedpur registered the highest ever sales volumes in the history of the company. The company finds it a good time now to make investments and expand further. On 31 October 2017, the Indian head was appointed as the global CEO and MD of Tata Steel that will now include Europe as well. Currently, he is also a member of Board of directors of Tata Steel Special Economic Zone Limited, Indian Iron and Steel Sector Skill Council, Tata Steel Foundation and Jamshedpur Football And Sporting Private Limited.</div>

T.V. Narendran is a Mechanical Engineer from Regional Engineering College (now NIT), Trichy and pursued his MBA from IIM Calcutta. In an event at IIM, he has shared that until he got into the institute, the single biggest failure was not getting into an IIT. He is also a Chevening Scholar and has attended the Advanced Management Programme in CEDEP - INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France.</div>

An avid runner and fitness enthusiast, he runs 8km/hour three days a week and has run 10km in the Tata Steel Kolkata 25K marathon for the last two years. Running time couples up as his thinking time too along with work out. He also likes to read on current affairs and history, listen to music and spend time with the family. When the work pressure gets too much, he shuts the windows and doors and play drums.</div>

Dr. Thomas Enders or Tom has been with Airbus, world's second largest airplane manufacturer and its predecessor companies for 23 years serving across the full breadth of the company's business units and multiple locations. Dr. Tom Enders landed in the world of aerospace in 1991 when he joined the marketing team of Daimler Chrysler Aerospace AG (DASA). After spending a few years in marketing, he rose through various roles like Chief of Staff, Director of Corporate Development & Technology, and Head of Defence Systems.</div>

After the merger of DASA with Aérospatiale Matra and Construcciones Aeronáuticas SA, that created the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company (EADS) in 2000, he was made the head of EADS Defence and Security Systems Division. His efforts in merging the German, Spanish and French aerospace companies was commendable. He also headed the Group’s Defence Division from 2000 to 2005.</div>

From 2005 to 2007, this German was the co - CEO of EADS along with Noël Forgeard first and Louis Gallois later. However, the going got tougher after the first year with delayed launches, drop in share prices, bad shape of financial statements, allegations on his co-CEO, his resignation and replacement etc.</div>

In 2007, when the outdated co-chair system was scrapped off, this great leader became the head of Airbus, the commercial aircraft unit and the main subsidiary of Airbus Group. With Dr.Tom in the forefront, Airbus opened an assembly line in China which started a new chapter expanding into emerging markets. It was the first one outside Europe, a giant step. He was instrumental in the establishment of the European plane giant's business in the United States. In 2008, Airbus delivered a record number of aircraft and increased its customer base. More customers and more number of orders saw turbulent times ahead with the need to scale up the production, technical difficulties and the pressure to deliver the orders on time. But he did not sit back and let the difficulties get to him.</div>

Dr. Tom assumed the mantle of CEO of Airbus Group SE on June 1, 2012. The group was known as EADS until January 1, 2014 when it was renamed as Airbus Group after its biggest subsidiary. He has been a member of the Executive Committee of Airbus Group since its creation in 2000. He had numerous challenges to deal with including the ripples of issues from the previous years. He set out a bold plan to shake up the corporate conglomerate by normalising the company's governance, reorganisation, restructuring its portfolio and enhancing its growth and profitability. However, he got a hard blow at his first attempt towards this when German Chancellor failed to back the deal worth €36bn to merge Airbus with Britain’s BAE Systems, just months after taking office. The deal, if executed would have created world's largest aerospace and defense company. He then worked towards governance changes to reduce the political influence and making presence of Airbus in Asia – Pacific and North American regions.</div>

Dr. Tom Enders earned his stripes when he moved the headquarters to Toulouse, France stating that the headquarters should be where the main activity is. Inspite of strong opposition from German politicians, he stuck to his plan. He brought in many significant changes since then like streamlining the business, rebranding EADS to Airbus, consolidating space and defense divisions, merging corporate headquarters with commercial jet unit etc. All of these changed the way the company worked and made it more integrated, collaborative, less bureaucratic for speedier decision making and execution, more economic and shareholder driven.</div>

As Dr.Tom move closer to the completion of his second term in 2019, Airbus has a bunch of new ideas to look forward to. Many new initiatives like entering to drone industry, building an on-demand helicopter service with Uber, creating a space based internet system, a new modular transportation system, called Pop.Up, that combines autonomous cars and drone, expansion in the usage of 3D-printed materials in its aircraft etc are in developing stage.</div>

Dr. Anil Jindal is from a middle class family of milkmen. During his school days, he used to deliver milk in the neighbourhood and during college days, he took tuition classes. After graduating in commerce from Aggarwal College, Faridabad, he joined the same college as an accounts lecturer and worked there for an year. But he felt that it was not what he wanted to do.</div>

It was around the time when the economy had just entered a new phase of growth and the consumption-led spending was growing. He sensed an opportunity and started a financial solutions business in 1985 with Rs. 10 lakh, which was his savings from the tuition classes. The firm financed two and three wheelers, television sets, then cars and gradually diversified to all kinds of financial intermediaries. The first year closed with a turnover of Rs 45 lakhs. In 1990, he formally incorporated the company as Bansla Finlease Ltd which became the first pillar of the SRS Group. Bansla Finlease Ltd then became a DSA of the Citibank. Following the success of his first venture, he started another company called BTL Investments Ltd in 1995. He started investing in land and by 2000, the company had 40 acres of land.</div>

In 1997, he started another company called BTL Industries Ltd and started manufacturing and marketing of Edible Oil & Tea. By this time, the group, then the BTL Group, was established in the market with good reputation. Success followed him for the next few years til the increased number of market players and unhealthy competition resulted in a steep fall in their internal rate of return and a rise in the default rate. Spotting the changes in the economy, he was on a lookout for greener pastures to tap. A close look at the emerging market dynamics, consumer trends, shopping and lifestyle trends, all pointed towards the lifestyle segment as the country was at the doors of westernisation. He trusted his gut feeling that a more modern, consumption oriented society is emerging. The number of people with higher disposable income and an attitude of self-indulgence rather than saving up for future is going to be on a rise. He personally went abroad to get familiarised with the mall culture, which was about to hit the town.</div>

In 2000, SRS Group (SRS stands for Sab Rahen Saath), which later became one of India's leading conglomerates, was incorporated with synergistic verticals of consumer entertainment and lifestyle businesses - SRS Cinemas, SRS Value Bazaar, SRS 7dayz, SRS Jewells. A diversified enterprise, the group focused on providing a complete package of services to meet all their needs in the lifestyle segment. This was the inspiration behind building SRS Malls in Faridabad, which became operational in 2006. From cinemas to fashion to grocery, the mall had it all – SRS Cinemas runs multiplex for entertainment, SRS Value Bazaar for retail stores for food, SRS Fashion Wear for apparel shopping, SRS 7dayz for food courts and restaurants for a fabulous meal and SRS Jewells for fine gold and diamond jewellery. SRS Cinemas was Haryana's first and highly impressive multiplex. Though there were many early-mover advantages, it was no cakewalk. They had to face several hiccups in aligning consumer habits. It was difficult to find trained staff for store management. So they had to hire the available manpower and train them extensively. Not having enough funds to finance brand building and promotion, attracting people to 'expensive looking' stores etc were some of the other issues in hand. Eventually, the people warmed up and embraced the initiations whole heartedly. Their hard work really paid off at the end and they could put up a great show.</div>

The property prices rocketed and the value of land which he bought a few years back grew exponentially. The group launched their first realty project, SRS Residency in Faridabad. The group also started designing and marketing jewellery. In short, the group thrived on diversification concentrating on tier II and tier III towns, where there were less options for people to spend. Though the market was not favourable for IPOs, Anil's efforts in the right direction made SRS Ltd's IPO in August 2011 a huge success, following which the company got listed in NSE and BSE. SRS Real Infrastructure Ltd also got listed in both the exchanges and SRS Finance Ltd in BSE in 2013.</div>

In 2003, the company partnered with French peer Michelin to make radial tyres for trucks and buses. However, it had to terminate the JV in two years as it never took off in Indian market as expected. In 2006, Apollo acquired Dunlop Tyres International’s South African operations and Netherland’s bankrupt tire maker Vredestein Banden in 2009, making strong roots in Africa and Europe. He later sold South African factory to fund his biggest buyout in 2013. The company also started an Rs 2,500 crore radial tyre plant in Sriperumbudur near Chennai in 2007. In 2009, Apollo began selling its Indian made products in Europe. It opened its Global R&D Centre in Netharlands in 2013 and in Chennai in 2016. Two years back, Apollo bought Germany’s Reifencom for €45.6 million. It has recently inaugurated its new $500 million consumer and commercial tire plant in Budapest, Hungary crossing another milestone in their global growth journey. It will continue its focus on India, even while strengthening its operations in Europe. The company also ventured into two wheeler tyres market last year.</div>

Big company! Never heard of it’. Cut to 2013, he was almost going to seal the biggest deal of his business career by buying Cooper Tire & Rubber in an all-cash deal worth about $2.5 billion. He has driven the company from a small single plant Indian manufacturer of commercial vehicle tyres, to a global entity with a full - fledged product portfolio, with six plants worldwide.</div>

It was Oskar’s dad, Raunaq Singh who founded the company in 1976 when the Government of Kerala gave him a paper license to manufacture tyres. However there was no factory then. After graduating in industrial engineering and business administration from University of California, he joined in a factory in US that produced machines for manufacturing pipes. It so happened that the president of the company wanted to visit India and Onkar fixed an appointment for him with his father. Upon meeting, the he consented to finance and provide machines for him to set up their own factory in India. In 1977, the first plant was established in Kerala, India.</div>

Year 1979. Things did not work out as expected and the company could not take off. It bore great losses and was about to collapse in just two years time. Things got worse when Supreme Court appointed an interim board to take over the firm on account of huge financial losses against its dwindling share capital resulting in long legal battle. When the Onkar expressed his desire of joining the ailing company, many called it as a no-fail recipe for failure. He had just honesty, youth and determination to rely on. He gathered the employees and told them about the two doors in front of them – either shut the factory and move on or attempt to create a 1 billion company. The echoes of employees' laughter that filled the room post presenting the plan of this novice motivate him even today. Many exited right away. A few stayed – more so because that was their only option.</div>

What followed was magical. The passionate, hardworking and determined bunch took the company to 1 billion mark in seven years carving a space for itself in truck tyres industry. The balance sheet and the industry showed a promising future for the company.</div>

Onkar's struggle did not end there. His dad wanted to convert Apollo into a typical Indian conglomerate by diversifying into unrelated businesses. However, Onkar was against this as he wanted to stick to and concentrate on tyre manufacturing business. He had to pick up a battle in the boardroom with his dad, his role model, for what he believed was the right thing for the company, its employees and stakeholders. He refers to it as the darkest, bleakest period of his life. It was a time when he was questioned by one and all. He had to face a lot of brickbats from his family as well as from the company. Everybody had to take sides and the strong bonded family split into two. In the best interest of the business, he had to take over his dad's position leaving a deep scar for the rest of his life.</div>

Onkar Kanwar assumed the mantle of Chairman of Apollo Tyres in 2002. Neeraj Kanwar, his youngest son took over daily operations of Apollo Tyres from his dad. He could convince the Board about focusing and growing in the tyre industry rather than diversification. He strongly believes that the bitter experiences he has had and the decisions he made in his life has played a huge role in shaping who he is today and how he sees things.</div>

In 2003, the company partnered with French peer Michelin to make radial tyres for trucks and buses. However, it had to terminate the JV in two years as it never took off in Indian market as expected. In 2006, Apollo acquired Dunlop Tyres International’s South African operations and Netherland’s bankrupt tire maker Vredestein Banden in 2009, making strong roots in Africa and Europe. He later sold South African factory to fund his biggest buyout in 2013. The company also started an Rs 2,500 crore radial tyre plant in Sriperumbudur near Chennai in 2007. In 2009, Apollo began selling its Indian made products in Europe. It opened its Global R&D Centre in Netharlands in 2013 and in Chennai in 2016. Two years back, Apollo bought Germany’s Reifencom for €45.6 million. It has recently inaugurated its new $500 million consumer and commercial tire plant in Budapest, Hungary crossing another milestone in their global growth journey. It will continue its focus on India, even while strengthening its operations in Europe. The company also ventured into two wheeler tyres market last year.</div>

Back in late 80s, when Apollo Tyres was just at 3 billion, Onkar met the Chairman of U.S based tire maker Cooper Tire & Rubber Company and expressed his desire to buy Cooper's technical collaboration, he shooed away saying “Apollo Tyres? Big company! Never heard of it’. Cut to 2013, he was almost going to seal the biggest deal of his business career by buying Cooper Tire & Rubber in an all-cash deal worth about $2.5 billion. However, he lost the deal following a highly charged courtroom battle in the United States.</div>

Onkar Kanwar is always high about giving back. He is always enthusiastic about bettering the lives of people around. He treats his employees as assets and has some of the first employees of the company still with him. He is highly interested in education and healthcare. The company has won many awards for its CSR initiatives. Well travelled and an avid reader, he is very keen on learning about modern management practices and its successful implementation in business.</div>

His interests in health have led to the establishment of super specialty hospitals under the Artemis brand in northern India.
